At Valley Design, we’ve always been committed to creating innovative solutions, and one of our most impactful designs is our flipping mechanisms. Designed for easy, space-efficient storage, this mechanism has become a vital part of our product lineup, helping customers maximize storage space while maintaining quality and durability.

The Genu-Fold

The story of our flipping mechanisms began shortly after Valley Design’s start in 1986. As our line of table bases grew, so did the need for more versatile and space-efficient table solutions. So, cofounder – and now sole owner – Butch Isensee explored the idea of a mechanism that would allow a table’s legs to fold and store more compactly without sacrificing functionality.

By 1993, after a year of testing and development, the first version of the Genu-Fold was introduced. This “locking table leg system that’s a snap to use” featured a low-profile, single or  double-column folding mechanism with a positive locking mechanism for stability. This product made it easier for customers to store tables efficiently, freeing up valuable floor space without the hassle of complicated mechanisms.

Refining the Mechanism

Shortly after the original’s release, we introduced an upgraded version: Genu- Fold 2. This new table base offering featured a lighter weight, single-handle design, and a smoother locking mechanism.

These improvements made it even more convenient for users to operate.

However, the real breakthrough came with the introduction of the Genu-Fold 3 in 1999. Featuring a nylon injection-molded body housing and the same original internal metal components, the Genu-Fold 3 was designed to withstand heavy use while offering quick and simple fold for storage. This latest version – the one we continue to offer today – became our most popular flipping mechanism.

The Genu-Flip

As time went on, customer needs evolved, and so did our approach. To meet the demand for even more space-efficient solutions, we introduced another folding product: the Genu-Flip.

This design allows table tops to be flipped down towards the base, making it possible to nest tables together and further reduce the space needed for storage. The Genu-Flip quickly grew in popularity as it offered both flexibility and security while allowing users to store multiple tables in a compact footprint.

Continuing to Evolve
